An Epidemiological Study on Drug Intoxication

Abstract
An epidemiological study was carried out towards 419 cases with drug intoxication who were treated or admitted to the Incheon Provincial Hospital, during the period of 2 years, from January 1, 1967 to August 31, 1968.
As the results, followings were obtained.
1. Distribution of the patients with drug intoxication by sex were 42.5% in male and 57.5% in female.
2. In the age distribution, the most predominant age group was 20~29 years of age with 45.1% which was followed by the group 10~19, 30~39 and 40~49 years of age in order. 10~19 and 20~29 years of age became almost two third with 62.5%
3. The highest incidence was shown in the unemployed with 33.9%, and the next was students.
4. The more than half of all cases has graduated from primary and middle school with 53.0%.
5. With the marrital status, the single revealed the highest incidence with 42.5%, and those who belong to illegal marrital lives rated 31.9%.
6. With the season, male was frequently intoxicated in Spring, and female in autumn.
7. Intoxications were fraguently occured during 19~24 o¢¥clock with 43.2% and 72.3% of the total were occured in the afternoon.
8. Regarding the place, intoxications were frequently occured at their home in all ages, and in the mountain-side in youth.
9. In regard to the method of suicidal attempt, 55.2% of all cases used seconal, and the next were rat poison, serena and quinnine.
10. The largest group showed coma as their chief symptom, which was followed by drowsiness and headache.
11. The rate of admission was 77.3% of the total.
12. Regarding the duration of admission, the almost half of cases were admitted to hospital for 3 days.
